A Jay Morrish design that opened in 2003 as Vista Ridge. It's a big, links-style public course in Erie with rolling bentgrass fairways framed by native prairie, plenty of sand, several ponds and large, undulating greens. At 7,579 yards and a 143 slope from the tips, it's one of the longer and tougher public tests on the Front Range.

Strengths

  • Serious elevation for the plains. Hole 6 drops into a valley 51 ft below its green, and 15 falls 54 ft over 678 yards.
  • Variety in the par 3s, from the 229-yard downhill 14th to the ravine carry on 16.
  • Eight sets of tees, from 4,717 to 7,579 yards, so it scales to any group.

Watch for

  • Homes line most fairways, so wide misses carry real risk.
  • The native prairie is thick. A ball that goes in is often lost.
  • Wind across the open high ground changes club choice a lot.

About these flyovers. Ground shape comes from USGS 3DEP lidar elevation and the ground photo is USDA NAIP aerial imagery, both public domain. The photo may be a few seasons older than the course today. Hole routing comes from OpenStreetMap. Its mapped lines run 5 to 10 percent shorter than the Championship card on most holes, so the back tees are placed by extending each hole to its card yardage. Heights are exaggerated about 1.3 times so slopes read on screen, and the elevation figures in the notes are real, measured from the lidar. Trees are placed automatically from the photo. The flyover shows four of the eight tee sets, and the scorecard below lists six.
